Public vs. Private IP Addresses

Public IP addresses are globally unique and routable on the internet. They are assigned by your Internet Service Provider (ISP) and are required for any device that needs to be directly accessible from the internet.

Private IP addresses are used within local networks and are not routable on the public internet. Common ranges include 10.0.0.0/8, 172.16.0.0/12, and 192.168.0.0/16.

Static vs. Dynamic IP Addresses

Static IPs remain constant and are ideal for servers, email systems, and VPN endpoints. Dynamic IPs are assigned by DHCP and change periodically — suitable for general workstations and client devices.
